Original Flappy Bird Creator Denounces Web3-Backed Re-Release

–Dong Nguyen, the original creator of the iconic mobile game Flappy Bird, has publicly distanced himself from the upcoming re-release of the game, which is set to incorporate Web3 and cryptocurrency elements.

A Disconnected Revival

The new version of Flappy Bird, announced by The Flappy Bird Foundation, has generated buzz as it reemerges over a decade after its initial removal from app stores. The Flappy Bird Foundation, a group of dedicated enthusiasts, recently acquired the game’s trademark. This move comes after Nguyen had removed the game from stores in early 2014, citing concerns about its addictive nature despite its significant daily earnings.

However, it has come to light that Gametech Holdings obtained the trademark after Nguyen failed to renew it. As a result, Nguyen did not receive compensation for the trademark transfer and was not involved in the re-release decision.

Adding to the controversy, Michael Roberts, who leads the Flappy Bird Foundation, is also the head of 1208 Productions, a crypto firm behind the Web3 gaming platform GLP. While the specifics of the re-release’s integration with Web3 technology remain unclear, the game is expected to introduce new characters and modes, and may include microtransactions due to its free-to-play model.

Nguyen, who has been silent for seven years, took to X to clarify his stance on the matter. “I have no connection to their game,” Nguyen stated. “I did not sell anything, and I do not support cryptocurrency.” His statement underscores his detachment from the re-release and its associated Web3 elements.
